BHSECQ’s personal development with the issue of mental health has been impressive. A few years ago, BHSECQ’s student government fought for a breather from the constant stress and demands that are evident when experiencing the curriculum. There was a need to feel a sense of self outside of homework and test scores. Recognizing as a school that taking a full day for both the faculty and the student body’s mental health was necessary and a major step. As a result of their efforts, two school days were designated to celebrate the feelings of being human and enjoying each other’s company. Additionally, these days shed light on the importance of having a community and resources if ever needed.
Mental health days can be very beneficial, and so to make this day as relaxing as possible, BHSECQ has made changes for the upcoming days. On Wednesday, December 20th, the first mental health day will be a chance for Year 2’s to go ice skating. On this day, Year 1’s, as well as the 9th and 10th grade students, will be able to experience a new system compared to the previous workshops. The second day will be on Thursday, May 23rd, which allows for every grade to choose a trip from a list of options. The upcoming mental health day in December will be different from past workshops and activities. Students will follow their regular class schedules, and within the days leading up to mental health day, classes will discuss what they would like to do during the period. Students can plan to watch a movie, do arts and crafts, relax, have a party, or whatever helps express their mind. There will be other activities happening around the school so that students can drop in during their lunch and free periods. This new system helps take away the stress for administrators; compared to past years of remaking each student’s schedule for just one day. It also helps students be vocal about what is important to them and what makes them feel relaxed. Additionally, the student body can connect on a more personal level by communicating how to create the ideal mental health day.
