B.Q. Greenside Column by Molly Castle ’25, Botany Club and Green Team

This month’s sustainability initiative can be found within our very own school cafeteria. The BHSEC Green Team has created a new table for food waste, where unwanted lunch items can be left for other students to eat. After noticing the quantity of food wasted in the cafeteria each day, the Green Team decided to create this table to ensure that the Bard could lessen our adverse environmental impact. According to Club President Gaby O’Neill, the club was created with the goal of “starting food recovery initiatives, at our school, and also […] starting composting and recycling.” Currently, they are focused on food waste, and are donating any food that doesn’t get eaten by Bard students. Any food left over at the end of the day is taken by a club member to a community fridge in their own neighborhood, so that people in their community can take what they need. According to Gaby, they are also working on donating hot meals to those in need and starting other, more ambitious projects soon. Read the next edition of the Greenside column to find out more!
