A Fairytale Without the Fairytale? by Valentina Tang ’26

On March 21, 2025, Disney released their live action remake version of the iconic Snow White. Expecting very much positive feedback, it was instead hit by a storm of backlash from individuals worldwide. The adaption faced even more criticism when the actress that starred in the role, Rachel Zegler, went to promote the film while bringing down the original in 1937. Many critics believe her commenting how she was “scared of the original cartoon” and her admitting to only watched the film once, to be under qualified to become an actress for the iconic Disney princess. In addition, the actress of the Evil Queen, Gal Gadot, was also heavily criticized for her poor skills. Many of the new elements in the new adaptation devoid the original, and stripped off many of the iconic aspects from the original Snow White. During an interview, a student complains, “the movie just had too much CGI. It was really obvious when the quality difference is distracting,” hinting that the movie’s 209 million dollar budget did not quite reflect in the movie itself. In a separate interview, another student says, “I don’t quite like the original Snow White movie, so I’m not particularly mad that this new movie tried to branch out a little bit, but everything added just seems so useless and unnecessary.” The movie is currently sitting at a 1.6/10 (6% like) rating on IMDb and 40% rotten tomatoes. The controversy surrounding the new adaptation is real, and continues to flock social media worldwide facing many more criticism from the public.
