Shining A Spotlight on Sprouting Clubs! by Jack Li ’29

There are many well-known clubs at Bard with a massive attendance, like MUN, Debate Team, Mock Trial, and Key Club. But this year we have some new clubs, and  they are certainly worth hyping up! I had the chance to sit down and interview some of the club leaders, who are freshmen such as myself! This month, I sat down with Matthew Wylaz, president of the Future Finance Leaders Club,  and Jovan Wellington, treasurer of CRAB(Computer and Robotics Association Of Bard).

Here is my interview with Mr Wylaz.

Me: Hello, Mr Wylaz, thank you for taking the time to talk to me about your club.

Mr Wylaz: My pleasure.

Me: So, what is your club about, and what is your position on it?

Mr Wylaz: As the founder and president of the FFL(Future Finance Leaders), we work towards bringing more attention to quantum economy and finance in general.

Me: Interesting, why did you decide to help create this club? What inspired you to participate in helping bring this club to life?

Mr Wylaz: I always wanted to help others, but the typical role of a doctor never sat right with me. With a passion for math and physics, I realised how important learning and teaching finance is. The future of everyone’s lives is dependent on our economy.

Me: This club clearly means a lot to you. What are your club’s plans for the future? Like, what are you planning to do in your club?

Mr Wylaz: I plan to partake and research and most likely try and tackle a larger competition with time.

Me: Thank you, Mr Wylaz, for your time. I wish you the best of luck in your club’s future.

Mr Wylaz: Thank you so much! Hopefully, you might decide to join or see what it’s about.

Here is my interview with Mr Wellington.

Me: Hello, Mr Wellington, thank you for taking the time to talk to me about your club.

Mr Wellington: Thank you for having me.

Me: Could you explain to me your club and your position in it?

Mr Wellington: My club is mainly focused on robotics, CRAB(Computer and Robotics Association Of Bard). I am currently the treasurer of the club.

Me: Tell me, why did you decide to help create this club? What was your motivation for bringing this club to life?

Mr Wellington: My motivation was to help educate more people that are interested in learning about Robotics and coding.

Me: I admire your passion for this club. What are your club’s plans for the future? Anything you are planning to start or do?

Mr Wellington: In the near future, we  are pushing ourselves to  compete against other schools like Brooklyn Tech Or Stuyvesant. Moreover, we also want to teach people who don’t really know much about robotics and coding by teaching the basics. At the end, we want all of our members to compete in at least one competition during their time at CRAB.

Me: Thank you Mr Wellington for your time. I hope your club is successful and prosperous in the future.

Mr Wellington: Thank you for having me.

BHSECQ is a very diverse community, and it’s important that we show these innovative and educational clubs some acknowledgement and respect for thinking of such a creative club and being so incredibly passionate about it. Our world is a place where intelligence barely matters as much as popularity, so it’s wonderful to see so many new clubs that have such a promising future and are teaching us crucial life skills that you won’t learn in school! The Future Finance Leaders Club teaches you about the importance of skills in mathematics and science, in being able to know how to invest in stocks and the best ways to manage your money. CRAB teaches you about the many different types of robots and why they are important in this world. Make sure to check out these clubs and see what’s up! Both clubs offer creative yet educational experiences that can teach you how to manage your money in times like these, or how STEM is important in our ever-changing future. Thank you to both Matthew Wylaz and Jovan Wellington for taking the time to sit down and discuss their club and why it means so much to them.  I hope their passion and hard work to bring their clubs to life inspires those around them looking to start a club in the future.
