Thanksgiving Day Guide by Julia Robinson ’26

What is Thanksgiving?

Can you believe it’s November already? That’s right, the school year is quickly progressing and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. This year, Thanksgiving takes place on November 28th (the fourth Thursday of the month). While many people gather with their families and friends to enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal, this article will introduce you to some alternative, exciting activities around NYC.

History of Thanksgiving

The first thanksgiving is considered to be in 1621 and held between English colonists and the Wampanoag people. In these times, the colonists and Wampanoag would hunt and gain an abundance of meat, seafood, and vegetables. Some of their meals included fish, geese, ducks, eels, stew, etc. For fun, they would shoot their guns, race with each other, and drink alcohol. While the details of the history of Thanksgiving are controversial, it has evolved over time to symbolize peace, connection and gratitude.

NYC Thanksgiving Events

If you’re still planning out your Thanksgiving, we’ve got your back. In NYC, the opportunities for fun are endless. The most popular event is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a three hour parade held in Manhattan that goes from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The parade starts in Harlem and ends in Herald Square, featuring marching bands, live music, dancing, and an appearance of Santa Claus to introduce the holiday season! While you’re hanging around in Manhattan, be sure to stop by the various restaurants offering classic thanksgiving meals! With so much to do, it can be easy to forget that the fun doesn’t stop after November 28th. In fact, it’s only just begun!  November 29th marks the start of Black Friday, meaning you can find sweet deals while shopping at stores like Target, Walmart, and any other malls! Well, that’s all for now, happy holidays!
