Journalism is key in a time where the world is in a dark place, and especially when the media has become so involved with news, it becomes hard to know who and what to trust. BQ Broadside’s hardworking team of editors, who are all seniors, have worked tirelessly to ensure that BHSECQ has a news outlet to turn to when knowledge is key. Every month, the editorial team along with the senior journalists put their blood, sweat, and tears into each edition, crafting masterful and captivating articles that grab attention. In this final article of the 2025-2026 school year of BQ Broadside, we will dive into the work of President John Dean, Vice President Julia Robinson, Editor In-Chief Shiria Kazi, Treasurer Jonathan Mansell, Giana Nevarez Tevere, Lazarus Lopez, Elias Frater, Secretary Valentina Tang, Steve Gonzalez, Mae O’ Riley, Avery Vilela, and Zannat Totini.
President John Dean started his journalism journey with his first article in 2023 titled, “Walnut Grove High: America’s Unrealistic Education Dream”, explaining the education crisis in Texas and how conservative states like itself are facing educator scarcity due to the state’s governmental policies. Her analysis of this survey detailed that more mental health support is needed, not just at Bard. She proposed a more student-driven solution, as the mental health facilities are supposed to help them, and what better way to have students create them? Over the next few years, Kazi wrote multiple more articles about Mental Health and its impact on student education, like “Mindfulness or Mindless? When Self-Care Becomes Toxic”, and “How Our Sleep Might Be Affected By Blue Light”. Thank you Shiria, for your constant dedication to the well-being of the Bard community, and working hard as an editor to make the articles the highest quality.

He then analyzed the economic distress of Tesla and how even with his losses, he still remains the richest person ever, by a large margin. He interviewed students and professors at Bard, and all expressed skepticism about Musk’s true intentions with his money, and how his wealth could potentially tumble in the future. In his following articles, he wrote many more political articles, such as “Government Shutdown”, and “A New Age Of U.S. Politics”. In his senior year, he wrote two major articles about the U.S. government shutdown, and explored journalistic opportunities, bringing petitions like expanding access to Journalism Education for students in NYC students. As we reflect on the incredible work of the seniors this year, who have had such an inspirational journey to the younger journalists, let’s remember how important Journalism is to our modern world, especially with misinformation being everywhere, like in Social Media. It is because of school newspapers like BQ Broadside that Bard is able to stay aware and informed about world events without propaganda or bias infesting the sentences of the article. As the year comes to a close, BQ Broadside has been providing the student perspective of world topics, with our journalists going to many important events and connecting our school community through these tough times. Thank you to all members of the Broadside for working hard through finals, exams, homework, and life in general to deliver the top stories of the month.
