Many fashion trends of this current generation have been stolen from the past, but like many say “History Repeats Itself.” This is a very true statement when it comes to the history of fashion trends because many of the outfits you could be wearing right now were popular before you were ever born. From Juicy tracksuits to baggy overalls, flowy dresses, JNCO jeans, and denim on denim, many trends spanning from the 70s to 2000s are making a comeback. With that, here are some of the most popular fashion trends of 2023.

Starting with jewelry and accessories, many celebrities and fashion models have been seen accessorizing to the max. From mixed metal necklace stacking inspired by 80s icons like Madonna to B.B Simon belts seen on the famous rapper Ice Spice, Julia Fox, and A$AP Rocky. Accessorizing seems to be a crucial aspect of current fashion trends. For earrings, a dramatic hoop or even a bamboo hoop inspired by icons like Aaliyah, or a small chunky hoop will be the perfect addition to any outfit. Or if you are going for the more 70s-inspired look, opt for a dainty dangly earring. Regardless, a popular trend with many accessories this year is bling.

Now moving on to clothing. It has been speculated that denim is back in style. Whether it is flared, baggy, or low-rise, denim is an important staple piece that also comes from the past. Yet, each style of denim is associated with a different decade. Flared would be associated with the 70’s, ranging from fashion icons like Farah Fawcett and Mick Jagger. Then baggy and low-waisted pants emerged in the 90s to the 2000s, being worn by celebrities like Paris Hilton and Tupac Shakur.

Another trend that involves wearing denim is layering whether it involves sweaters, pants, dresses, or tops. Layering with a denim vest relates to the 70s, or wearing a shirt under a dress would be considered 90s. Shirt styles such as 2000s bedazzled tube tops and camisoles, then 70s to the 90s flannels and polos, are all tops worn now that were staple pieces in previous decades.

A final comeback seen numerous times on runways and the streets is mesh wear. With looks from Rhianna, Zoë Kravitz, and Harry Styles, many mesh or see-through shirts and dresses are being worn. Then finally for footwear, there has been an emergence of vintage kitten heels similar to Carrie Bradshaw, or just pointed-toe shoes and boots in general. And of course, cowboy boots are back. Then for sneakers, Adidas Sambas, Nike dunks, and Jordan 4’s have been deemed as some of the most popular sneakers of the year.

Although fashion is always ‘evolving and changing’, we find ourselves always reaching to the past for answers. As a society we reduce, repurpose, and recycle fashion trends more often than we recycle our paper and plastics. With this, many questions have been left unanswered, such as; What will be the next fashion trend? Who will be the next ‘fashion icon’ of our generation? How long until we don’t reuse past fashion trends?
